Italian School of the 18th century - Santa Agnes - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 56 × 36 cm (unframed), 76 × 56 cm (framed). This 18th-century oil on canvas, attributed to the Tuscan school, displays stylistic characteristics that probably place it in the circle of Francesco Conti or an artist closely associated with him. The shading, the softness of the flesh tones, and certain formal devices bear a notable affinity with other documented works by the Florentine painter. The painting depicts Saint Agnes, one of the most venerated martyrs of early Christianity, recognizable by the lamb she holds in her arms, her quintessential iconographic attribute and a symbol of purity and sacrifice. According to Latin tradition, Agnes belonged to the noble gens Claudia and suffered martyrdom at the age of 12 during the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian. The scene conveys with sobriety and delicacy the spiritual strength of the saint, reflecting her innocence and steadfastness in her faith.
