Italian Tardo Romanesque transition to Gothic 14th Century - Saint John and the Virgin on Calvary - Carved and polychrome wood. Dimensions 65 × 15 × 9 cm. Saint John and the Virgin are presented together on Calvary, each wrapped in elaborately painted garments with floral motifs. Saint John, with one hand on his face and a book in the other, expresses a silent lament, while the Virgin, with a downcast look, holds her cloak with both hands. This 18th-century Spanish piece follows the Baroque style, with its marked drama and emotionality, typical of representations of Calvary in religious art.
