Framed dimensions: 71.5x85.5cm. Giovanni Giacometti (Stampa, 1868-1933) was a Swiss Post-Impressionist painter, father of Alberto Giacometti and Diego Giacometti. Son of Alberto and Caterina Ottilia Santi, he showed a good aptitude for drawing from a young age. Therefore, in 1886, at the age of 18, he decided to move to Munich to begin his studies at the School of Decorative Arts. There he met the Fauvist painter Cuno Amiet, who would become his great friend. Later, after discovering Impressionism, he traveled to France, where he continued his training at the Académie Julien for two years. In 1891, he returned to Stampa. His interests, however, soon led him to adventure once again. He went to Italy, where he visited Rome and Naples. His first successes did not come until 1900, when he exhibited in Zurich with Amiet and Holder. It was at this time that he married Anette. From this union his son Alberto was born in 1901, followed by Diego (1902), Ottilia (1903), and Bruno (1907). This was his period of greatest fulfillment, both personally and artistically. Between 1901 and 1912, he participated in the Kunstausstellung (Art Exhibition) in Munich and the Kunstlerhaus (Artists' House) in Zurich, as well as in an exhibition of the painters of the Die Brücke group in Dresden. During these years, one of his disciples was the Argentine painter Raúl Mazza. After the First World War, however, his artistic career took a backseat.
