Bidspirit auction | Pair of portraits of Romanian

Pair of portraits of Romanian Orthodox priests. Romanian School. 19th Century - Oil on canvas. A matched pair of facing portraits depicting two Romanian Orthodox priests, seated in three-quarter view with contemplative expressions. Both figures are dressed in dark robes and hold liturgical books, underlining their clerical identity. The mirrored composition, expressive similarity, and paired structure clearly indicate that these works were conceived as a set. Their calm and direct gazes convey a spiritual introspection. The modeling of the features, the rendering of the hands, and the neutral backgrounds reveal careful execution with a slightly primitive touch, typical of early 19th-century Romanian devotional art. These portraits belong to the Eastern Orthodox tradition, in which portraiture served both commemorative and moralizing functions. The frontal simplicity and restrained technique echo the aesthetics of religious icons, here reinterpreted with a more naturalistic sensibility. 54 x 64 cm each.
