Pair of Baroque pedestals. Hispanic School. 17th century. - Carved, polychrome, and gilded wood. With an imposing sculptural presence, this pair of Baroque pedestals takes the form of a truncated cone column and features exuberant relief decoration. The surface is richly carved with plant motifs, highlighting large vine leaves and bunches of grapes intertwined with undulating tendrils, a clear symbolic allusion to wine and fertility, common in the religious ornamental repertoire of the period. The deep and dynamic carving generates a chiaroscuro effect that enhances the three-dimensionality of the motifs. The water-based gilding on stucco enhances the volumes and gives the work a solemn brilliance. The meticulous and expressive workmanship harks back to Hispanic Baroque workshops, with an ornamental language characteristic of the devotional imagery of the period. Due to their size, formal richness, and symbolism, these pieces must have played a prominent role in a liturgical context, serving as supports for sculptures or devotional objects.
