Bidspirit auction | Holy Family with the Virgin

Holy Family with the Virgin in Glory. Viceregal School. 18th century - Oil on canvas. The composition depicts a devotional scene in which Saint Joseph lovingly holds the Child Jesus on a white cloth, while both are contemplated by the Virgin Mary in a glorious attitude, descending among golden clouds and escorted by cherubic heads. The Child directs his gaze toward his mother, who gently descends from above wrapped in a blue cloak and pink tunic, radiating serenity and grace. Saint Joseph, with a melancholic face and dark beard, appears wrapped in a dark brown cloak, conveying tenderness and protection. In the lower section, a sheaf of lilies and an open book complete the Josephite symbolism, reinforcing purity, wisdom, and obedience. The background is ethereal and nebulous, with warm tones that envelop the scene in a spiritual atmosphere. The workmanship reveals a restrained and careful technique, with soft strokes and delicate modeling, especially in the faces and fabrics. This work is part of the Andean viceregal painting of the 18th century, characterized by its pious imagery, compositional balance, and devotional function. It was probably conceived for a domestic or convent chapel. Measurements not indicated.
