Saint Rose of Lima crowned by angels. Mexican colonial viceregal school. 18th century - Oil on canvas. The painting depicts Saint Rose of Lima in a prayerful attitude, kneeling, receiving a crown of roses from the hands of angels and cherubs descending in flight. The saint, dressed in a Dominican habit and black cloak, displays a humble expression as she holds a rosary and raises one hand to her chest. The softly hazy gold and pink background reinforces the celestial character of the scene. At her feet, on the checkered floor, rest a skull and a book, alluding to penance and contemplation.
