Esther before King Ahasuerus. Circle of Peter van Lint (Antwerp, 1609-1690). Flemish School. 17th century - Oil on canvas. This large-format composition depicts the famous biblical episode in which Queen Esther appears before King Ahasuerus to intercede for her people. The scene is set in a majestic architectural space of classical inspiration, with Solomonic columns and arches that frame the action. The King, enthroned on the right, wearing military attire and with a restrained expression, directs his attention to Esther, who advances on her knees in a gesture of supplication, accompanied by maidens and bearers of golden vessels. The rich attire, the embroidered draperies, the intricately crafted metal objects, and the use of saturated tones reveal a notable influence of Flemish Baroque. The highly expressive figures are masterfully modeled through a careful gradation of light and shadow. The drama of the scene is intensified by the theatrical arrangement of the figures and the red curtain that dominates the upper part of the throne.
