Jesus on the way to Calvary with Veronica. 18th-century colonial school. - Oil on canvas. The scene unfolds one of the most moving moments of the Passion cycle: Christ's encounter with Veronica on his way to Calvary. Christ, overwhelmed by the weight of the cross, gazes with resignation and nobility, while Veronica offers him the cloth on which his face is imprinted, presented frontally on the canvas she is holding. The drama of the moment is reinforced by the crowd surrounding the composition: Roman soldiers in garish attire, carrying spears and helmets; astonished or grieving figures carrying crosses; and other figures who emphasize the narrative tension. The stylized treatment of the faces and proportions, the symbolic use of color, and the pronounced gestures lend an expressive and intensely devotional dimension to the work. The technique, although deliberately archaic, employs an earthy, contrasting palette, with defined contours and a somewhat rough finish, characteristic of 19th-century Spanish folk art influenced by Baroque imagery and processional representations. This painting is deeply symbolic and spiritual, connecting with the tradition of popular devotions in the Hispanic world. Dimensions: 145 x 177 cm
