Saint Nicholas of Bari. Spanish School. 17th Century - Oil on canvas. Saint Nicholas of Bari is depicted half-length, dressed in a white alb, a gold-embroidered cope, and a bishop's miter. He holds his staff in his left hand and blesses with his right. His serene and venerable face frames a compassionate gaze directed at the viewer, in keeping with his reputation as a protector of the needy. At the saint's feet, an open book and three golden spheres allude to the famous miracle of dowries. The dark, neutral background highlights the figure, illuminated by a golden light that accentuates the luster of the fabrics and the ornamental richness of the garments. The brushwork is restrained and precise, especially in the depiction of the face and the folds of the robes, giving the image a strong devotional charge. This work reflects the iconographic models of the Counter-Reformation, characteristic of 17th-century Spanish painting, where narrative clarity, compositional sobriety, and spiritual emphasis seek to inspire the piety of the faithful. 72 x 54 cm.
