Bidspirit auction | Christ crucified. Spanish School. 18th

Christ crucified. Spanish School. 18th century. - Mercury-gilded bronze, rosewood cross, ebony, tortoiseshell inlays, silver ridges, and silver cannonballs. The sculpture depicts Christ crucified in great anatomical detail, his arms extended in the shape of a cross and his head tilted to one side in an expression of serene suffering. The gilded body stands out intensely against the cross, decorated with silver ridges that reinforce its liturgical character. Golden rays emerge behind the head, underscoring the divine character of the scene. The technique and finishes reveal refined workmanship and a profound mastery of modeling. The whole reflects a Baroque aesthetic characteristic of 18th-century Spanish devotional sculpture, where theatricality, drama, and contrast between materials sought to move the viewer. The work stands out for its symbolic and visual impact within sacred imagery. Dimensions: 69 x 25 cm.
