The Bandits in the Cave. Johann Georg Trautmann, 1713–1769, 18th century - Oil on canvas. The scene takes place in a bourgeois domestic interior, rendered with great spatial fidelity and careful setting. A group of figures are arranged around a standing central figure, dressed in formal attire, whose solemn pose contrasts with the more relaxed attitude of the others. In the background, the period furniture and open windows allow us to perceive a deep space, enriched by the play of perspective and natural light. The work is in the tradition of 17th-century Dutch School genre painting, with precise workmanship, realistic treatment of fabrics, wood, and surfaces, and attention to light nuances.
