Immaculate Virgin. Colonial School. 18th Century - Carved and polychromed wood. Measurements: 57 x 25 x 14 cm; base: 20 x 24 x 24 cm. Sculpture of the Immaculate Virgin in a prayerful stance, standing atop an architectural base adorned with vegetal reliefs and gilded accents, surmounted by a cloud with cherubic heads. The figure, with an oval face and sorrowful expression, lifts her gaze slightly upward, enhancing her spiritual aura. The flowing motion of the cloak and the diagonal posture of the body generate an ascending effect that reinforces the traditional iconography. The original polychromy, still visible, features rich gilding and contrasts of deep red, black, and gold, with a patina that reveals its age. The workmanship is meticulous, particularly in the cloak’s folds and the expressive faces of the angels. This piece fully embodies the devotional ideals of the viceregal Baroque, characteristic of the 18th-century Colonial School, where art served to intensify the emotional and visual dimensions of religious experience.
