Attributed to José de Risueño y su Obrador (Granada, 1665-1732), Granada Baroque School of the 17th century - Oil on canvas depicting Saint Dominic de Guzmán receiving the Virgin and Child Jesus. Dimensions: 62 x 52 cm, framed dimensions: 72 x 60 cm. One of the most prominent Spanish painters and sculptors of the Granada Baroque. He trained in his father Manuel Risueño's workshop with the sculptors Diego and José de Mora and the painter Juan de Sevilla, all disciples of Alonso Cano. His work exhibits a wealth of religious artwork, reflecting the influence of Cano's models, a taste for naturalism, and the use of Flemish prints by Van Dyck. His paintings include religious scenes, such as The Coronation of Saint Rosalia and The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine (Granada Cathedral), The Virgin of the Rosary (private collection, Almería), and Saint Thomas Aquinas (acquired in 1911 by the Prado Museum). He collaborated with Palomino on the execution of The Triumph of the Eucharist and Saint Bruno on the dome of the Tabernacle of the Granada Charterhouse (in situ). He also painted portraits, most notably that of his protector, Archbishop Doctor Martín Azcargorta (Archbishop's Palace, Granada). In his sculptures he cultivated the same themes as in his painting, using a variety of materials: clay, wood, and stone, to create altarpieces, doorways, and church facades, most of them in his hometown.
