This costumbrista scene depicts a shepherd playing the flute, surrounded by farmyard animals, while a woman converses with him in a rustic architectural setting. The treatment of light, the scenographic distribution, and the expressiveness of the animals are heirs to the style of Rosa da Tivoli. The loose brushwork, earthy tones, and rural atmosphere place the work between the late Baroque and the rural Romanticism of northern Italy.
