Portrait of a Woman with a Desk. Manner of painting, attributable to Jean Nocret. French School. 17th century - Oil on canvas. The portrait depicts a lady seated in a palatial setting, dressed in a rich brocade gown in gold and ochre tones, adorned with black ribbons, with a blue cape draped over her arm. Her serene face, framed by loose curls, and her restrained attitude reveal a figure of high nobility. The composition includes a red curtain in the background and part of a fine wood desk, elements that reinforce the atmosphere of aristocratic intimacy. The brushwork is fluid, with particular attention paid to the texture of the fabrics and the effects of light on the silky surfaces. The style, indebted to Baroque court portraiture, is inscribed in the studio environment of Jean Nocret, painter to King Louis XIV, whose work combines stagecraft with subtle psychological insight. This is a refined piece within the portrait tradition of 17th-century France. 107 × 84.5 cm.
