Bidspirit auction | Virgin and Child. Italian Neoclassical

Virgin and Child. Italian Neoclassical School. 18th Century - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 99 x 74.5 cm. The Virgin is shown seated, bust-length, holding the Child Jesus, who, upright on her lap, raises his right hand in a gesture of blessing. Their faces, of great serenity and soft modeling, are framed by warm light and a neutral background that draws attention to the intimacy of the scene. The composition stands out for its structural simplicity, the serene monumentality of the figures, and the softness of their flesh tones. The drapery, in sober and enveloping tones, reinforces the solemnity of the whole. This painting belongs to the Spanish Neoclassical School of the late 18th century, in which a formal refinement and an idealized aesthetic inspired by Renaissance models can be appreciated. The balanced and austere treatment of color and the frontal composition reinforce its devotional function. A work of delicate lyricism, where the gaze and gesture of the Child channel the sacred dimension of the scene.
