Crucifixion. Antwerp School. 17th century - Oil on copper. Dimensions: 57 x 74.5 cm. Christ appears crucified in the center of the scene, flanked by the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene, while a group of soldiers flail on the right. The stormy sky, angels bearing attributes of the Passion, and the pleading gaze of the figures intensify the drama of the moment. The composition is organized in two blocks: the divine sphere on the left and the earthly world with armor and horses on the right. The fine brushwork and saturated colors reveal a precise technique characteristic of the Antwerp School of the mid-17th century. The copper support provides sharpness and chromatic depth. This work articulates emotional pathos with religious narrative, in a synthesis of devotion, theatricality, and Flemish detail. A piece of great symbolic intensity, it seeks to provoke an emotional response in the viewer.
