This anthropomorphic sculpture from the Chancay culture, originating on the central coast of Peru between 1200 and 1450 AD, is an outstanding example of pre-Columbian ceramic art. Measuring 63 cm tall, its elongated and stylized structure, with a cylindrical body and short limbs, gives it a distinctive character within the Chancay sculptural repertoire. The figure represents a character with a stern expression, emphasized by its face decorated with black paint in geometric patterns. Its circular, protruding eyes, along with thick eyebrows converging on the nose, reinforce its enigmatic appearance. The small mouth and lines in the cheek area suggest a ritual or symbolic representation. In addition, it wears a large, dark, cylindrical headdress with a frieze decorated with geometric motifs, indicating high status or a ceremonial function.
