Exceptional Pair of Italian Gothic Lions, in bronze, Veneto 14th-15th century - 10 x 5 x 14 cm, lions only, 25 cm with base. This exquisite pair of bronze lions, dating from between the 15th and 16th centuries, is a testament to the artistic mastery and refined metalwork of Renaissance Europe. Probably from Venice or Nuremberg, these majestic felines are characterized by their careful craftsmanship, with a serene yet imposing stance, flowing manes, and detailed claws, evidencing the influence of late Gothic art and the early Renaissance. Similar pieces are found in museums and private collections throughout Europe. Examples of bronze lions with ornamental functions appear in the Louvre and the Victoria & Albert Museum, some of them associated with Venetian or German manufacture of the period. In particular, fireplace andirons with lion figures were common in Renaissance palaces, such as those preserved in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice.
