Campaign Altar Virgin. Flemish School. 15th Century - Carved, polychromed and gilded wood. Dimensions: 31 x 12 cm. Extraordinary 15th-century Flemish carving from the Burgundy region, originally intended for private devotion in portable altars used by nobles and prelates during travels or military campaigns. The sculpture depicts the crowned Virgin holding the Child on her left arm, both figures rendered with gentle and serene expressions that convey a sense of spiritual intimacy. The Virgin is clothed in a flowing mantle, adorned with traces of the original polychromy in shades of blue, red, and gold, accentuating the dynamic folds of the drapery and the dignity of the composition. The Child, holding a globe in his hand, appears in a blessing gesture, following the traditional iconography of the Saviour. The sculpture exhibits the typical features of late medieval Burgundian imagery, such as frontal solemnity, finely carved facial features, and naturalistic modeling of the garments. Despite its age, substantial traces of the original polychrome finish remain, enhancing its historical and aesthetic value.
