Saint Mary Magdalene with Chalice. Spanish School. 18th Century - Polychromed and carved wood, textiles, and embossed silver. Dimensions: 66 cm (carved height), 73 cm with base, 93 cm with crown. Exceptional 18th-century Spanish Baroque sculpture depicting Saint Mary Magdalene in full figure, richly adorned and conceived for devotional purposes. The face and hands are delicately carved and polychromed, while the body is dressed in sumptuous textiles, including damask and brocade, with voluminous drapery enhancing the theatrical quality of the piece. The saint wears an original 18th-century embossed silver crown with a radiant halo and holds a metal chalice in her right hand, a traditional penitential symbol in her iconography. Her facial features are soft and serene, with a finely executed polychromy that highlights naturalistic flesh tones and delicate blush on her cheeks and lips. She also wears antique jewelry and earrings, reinforcing the ornamental and processional character of the image. The base is inscribed with the name ”MAGDALENA” along with fragments of a Latin motto, completing its presentation as an object of devotion. The sculpture preserves its original patina and period details, adding to its authenticity and artistic significance. A remarkable example of Spanish Baroque sculpture, distinguished by its balance of expressiveness, textile richness, and symbolic presence.
