Castilian Mater Dolorosa with Silver Crown. Spanish School, 16th–18th Century - Magnificent sculpture of the Virgin of Sorrows, attributed to the Castilian School of the 16th century, carved in polychrome wood. This large-scale figure is exceptionally crafted, depicting a serene, introspective, and deeply emotive expression typical of the transition from the Renaissance to the early Baroque. The Virgin is richly dressed in embroidered robes, antique lace, and devotional jewels, including a silver heart pierced by seven swords—symbol of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The sculpture is crowned with an exquisite repoussé silver crown added in the 18th century, underscoring its liturgical and processional role. Originating from the region of Peñaranda, this statue stands out for its rarity, excellent preservation, and the harmonious fusion of artistic elements from different periods, making it a museum-worthy piece of great devotional and historical value.
