Bidspirit auction | Devotional Pietà Ensemble: Recumbent Christ

Devotional Pietà Ensemble: Recumbent Christ (17th Century) and Our Lady of Sorrows (19th Century) - Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: Virgin: 68 cm high, 34 cm wide; full ensemble: 85 cm high with crown. Outstanding devotional ensemble featuring a 17th-century Baroque sculpture of the Recumbent Christ and a 19th-century dressed image of Our Lady of Sorrows. Although originally acquired separately, both figures have been assembled to form a moving Pietà scene, rich in emotional and visual impact. Christ is finely carved in wood with remarkable anatomical realism and retains his original polychromy with signs of the Passion; the Virgin, of the ”head and hands” type, has a sorrowful expression, with glass eyes and tears, and wears a traditional black satin mantle with antique lace. The radiant crown is made of silvered metal. A unique devotional piece, ideal for collectors of sacred art or private chapels. Lot located in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply. An export permit from the country of origin may be required.
