Saint Anne. Spanish School. 16th Century - Carved, polychromed and gilded wood sculpture. Dimensions: 76 cm high, 54 cm wide (84 cm with halo). Magnificent depiction of Saint Anne, executed by the Spanish School in the mid-16th Century. The full-length figure appears with open arms in a gesture of prayer or reception, wearing a gilded robe with deep folds that emphasize the verticality of the composition. Her face, serene and melancholic, conveys a gentle and human expressiveness, enhanced by well-preserved original polychromy with rosy flesh tones and intricate gilding. The drapery, influenced by Italian Renaissance models, brings natural movement and solemnity to the piece. While the sculpture shows signs of age-appropriate wear, it retains remarkable structural integrity and finish. The later-added gilded halo frames the head and heightens the sacred presence of the figure. This early devotional artwork is a rare and valuable example of Spanish Renaissance religious sculpture.
