Immaculate Conception. Castilian School. 17th Century - Carved, polychromed and gilded wood sculpture. Dimensions: 101 x 40 cm (total height with crown: 119 cm). Striking Spanish Baroque sculpture of the Immaculate Virgin, crafted by the Castilian School in the late 17th Century. The Virgin stands in a graceful posture with hands crossed over her chest, wearing a gilded robe and mantle adorned with fine brocade detailing. She stands atop a crescent moon resting on a base with vividly painted cherub heads and a serpent—traditional symbols of the Immaculate Conception iconography. Her face, serene and tender, is delicately rendered with soft modeling and an upward gaze. The original polychromy and gilding are exceptionally well preserved, evidencing the technical and devotional quality of the work. A magnificent original silver crown with radiant halo frames the head, enhancing the sacred aura. The sculpture’s grand scale and solemn presence suggest it was created for a private chapel or oratory.
