Crowned Virgin with Child. Colonial School. 18th Century - Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions 97 x 27 cm. Devotional sculpture of the Virgin and Child, carved and polychromed in wood, attributable to a colonial workshop of the 18th Century. The Virgin is shown crowned, with a serene and frontal expression, wrapped in a mantle richly decorated with golden fleur-de-lis motifs over a blue ground, revealing a crimson interior with finely rendered textile textures. The Christ Child, seated on her left arm, raises His right hand in blessing while holding the orb in His left, symbol of universal sovereignty. At the base, a winged cherub with a vivid expression reinforces the celestial iconography. The vibrant polychromy, masterfully applied, combines intense tones to convey both emotional intimacy and spiritual grandeur, consistent with the visual strategies of viceregal imagery. The anatomical treatment, hieratic frontality, and decorative richness reflect the blend of European influence with local sensibilities characteristic of colonial Latin American production. A work of high symbolic and aesthetic value within the Baroque sacred art tradition.
