Pair of Musician Cherubs. Colonial School. 18th Century - Carved and polychromed wood. Estimated dimensions 40 x 25 cm (each figure). Pair of devotional sculptures in carved and polychromed wood, depicting musician cherubs in a dancing posture, originating from a colonial workshop of the 18th Century. The figures portray winged infant bodies with gentle expressions and rosy cheeks, one playing a trumpet and the other holding a stringed instrument resembling a violin. Each piece displays dynamic composition and lively gestures, with raised legs and twisting torsos enhancing the sense of movement. The polychromy, rich in tones and contrasts, features intense reds, blues and gilded accents applied with meticulous technique over the wings and garments. These cherubs, iconographically tied to heavenly music and divine praise, were often integrated into altarpieces, niches or larger liturgical ensembles. Their craftsmanship reflects European Baroque influence, reinterpreted through the lens of colonial artistic production, notable for its expressive modelling and decorative sophistication.
