Bidspirit auction | Virgin of the Rosary with
Virgin of the Rosary with Child. Spanish School. 18th Century - Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions 47 x 13 cm. Baroque devotional sculpture from the 18th Century representing the Virgin of the Rosary with the Child, carved in wood and polychromed in golden and red tones. The Virgin is crowned and adorned with a metallic halo, holding a sceptre in her right hand while carrying the Christ Child in her left arm. The Child, nude and frontally posed, blesses with one hand and displays a small mark on His chest symbolising the Sacred Heart. At the Virgin’s feet, three winged cherub heads enhance the celestial iconography typical of Spanish Baroque imagery. Although the original rosary is missing, the invocation is clearly recognisable through the figure’s attributes and pose. The sculpture features solid modelling, aged polychromy, and an authentic patina underscoring its historical character. A highly expressive piece with strong devotional value, prized in both liturgical and collector contexts.
