Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. Spanish School. 17th Century - Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions 47 x 22 cm. Spanish Baroque sculpture from the 17th Century representing Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a revered Jesuit saint known for his devotion, purity and care for the sick. The figure, portrayed with a serene and introspective expression, is dressed in a habit and cape, holding a modern crucifix in a gesture of prayer. The treatment of the drapery conveys restrained dynamism, while the delicately modelled youthful face adheres to Baroque sculptural conventions. The piece was acquired in a precarious state and underwent a carefully documented professional restoration that preserved the original polychromy and performed reversible reintegrations. The restoration has revived the sculptureās expressive presence, enhancing its aesthetic and historical value. A notable example of Jesuit iconography in Spanish sacred art.
