Bidspirit auction | Crowned Virgin with Child. Hispanic
Crowned Virgin with Child. Hispanic School. 16th–17th Century - Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions 67 x 20 cm. Hispanic sculpture from the transition between the Late Gothic and Early Baroque periods, carved in wood and polychromed, depicting the Virgin holding the Child in her arms. The figure displays serene frontal symmetry and slender volumes, with restrained vertical folds. The Virgin is dressed in a golden tunic and a mantle in cobalt blue and burgundy, evoking classical elegance. The nude Christ Child rests one hand on His mother’s chest and holds an orb in the other, symbol of universal sovereignty. Both figures have rosy cheeks and gentle features, typical of popular devotional imagery of the time. The later-added crown and radiating halo enhance the celestial nature of the composition. The sculpture retains much of its original polychromy, with respectful restorations. Its scale and design suggest it was intended for a chapel or convent, likely used in private or communal worship. A piece of significant interest due to its age, craftsmanship, and devotional character.
