Saint Barbara. Spanish School. 18th Century - Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions 55 x 20 cm. Devotional sculpture in wood from the 18th Century depicting Saint Barbara, identified by the chalice she holds in her right hand—an emblem of faith, martyrdom, and Christian devotion. Measuring 50 cm without the base, the figure exhibits refined modelling with a serene facial expression, flowing hair, and garments in red, gold, and ochre tones, featuring dynamic drapery and light treatment. The gentle, youthful face is finely detailed with subtle painting techniques. The sculpture retains much of its original polychromy, with wear stabilized through respectful professional restoration. Its compact volume and frontal posture are characteristic of Spanish popular Baroque imagery, intended for private worship or small sacred settings. Rich in symbolism and craftsmanship, this piece is a fine example of female saint iconography in Christian devotional art.
