Seated Virgin with Crowned Child. Hispanic School. 18th Century - Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions 33 x 13 cm. Hispanic devotional sculpture created circa 1780, depicting the enthroned Virgin with the crowned Christ Child seated on her lap. The composition merges medieval tradition with the sensitivity of late popular Baroque. The Virgin is dressed in a golden tunic and blue mantle, gently holding the Child, who bears the orb in His left hand—a symbol of Christ's universal sovereignty. The overall frontality is softened by expressive facial modelling and dynamic drapery folds, in line with rural Spanish Baroque aesthetics of the 18th Century. The piece preserves its original polychromy, with evident craquelure, wear and losses, attesting to its age and authenticity. Intended for domestic or convent devotional use, this sculpture embodies the everyday spirituality of Hispanic culture and the endurance of historic forms reinterpreted with simplicity and depth. A piece of notable ethnographic and artistic value within the tradition of popular imagery.
