Indian Art - Exceptional devotional bronzes of Vishnu and Lakshmi - 14th - 17th centuries AD - Pair of devotional bronzes of Vishnu and Lakshmi - South India, 16th-17th centuries. An important pair of Hindu bronze sculptures, cast using the lost-wax method, representing Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, made in South India during the late medieval period, between the 16th and 17th centuries. The figures, 21 cm and 18.5 cm tall, are depicted standing in a frontal, hieratic pose. Vishnu is shown with four arms bearing his traditional attributes, the chakra and the shankha, while Lakshmi adopts a sober and elegant iconography, in keeping with domestic devotional images from the Vaishnava tradition. Condition: very good, with a stable original patina and no apparent alterations.
