Attributed to Maurice Utrillo (Paris, 1883 - Dax, France, 1955) - View of Montmartre, “Rue Saint-Rustique” - Oil on cardboard. Dimensions: 22.5 × 16.5 cm. This small painting depicts a view of Montmartre, specifically the Rue Saint-Rustique, a subject the artist explored on numerous occasions, capturing different sensations depending on the moment and period. Around twelve oil paintings dedicated to this same street are known, and this work is among the earliest of the group. The white walls, intensely illuminated by the sun, are created using a mixture of paint and glue, a characteristic feature of his early period, dated approximately between 1905 and 1910. This chronology is confirmed both by the type of support and by the oxidation resulting from the painting's natural aging. The technique Utrillo employs to depict the sloping, ascending walls along the side of the road is particularly interesting, as they broaden the perspective and contribute to greater depth and a sense of space. The painting was trimmed in the past to fit this elegant 19th-century frame, resulting in the loss of the lower portion of the support, where the artist's signature presumably appeared. Numerous prints with this same motif also exist, produced up until the 1950s. Montmartre was almost an obsession for Utrillo, although the works from his early period retain an energy and intensity that diminishes in later periods. Technical and scientific studies have been carried out that guarantee the work's originality, its correct dating, and its full compatibility with the artist's output.
