Italian School, 17th Century - Lamentation over the Dead Christ c. 1627 - Polychrome terracotta sculpture, signed and dated on the reverse “Antonio Dalrè 1627”. The work depicts the Deposition of Christ and the Lamentation, with the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Salome. The composition maintains a sober character and a powerful narrative effect, drawing iconographic inspiration from variations of Giotto's original Lamentation from the Trecento. This Bolognese school sculpture group is of considerable historical and documentary interest, both for its artistic quality and for its preserved signature and date.
