Flemish School of the 17th Century - Portrait of a Noblewoman - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 108 × 92 cm. An inscription in capital letters, “JEANE GILE EPOASE EN 1618 PEBET GONTIER P DU NOM, ” identifying the sitter and dated 1618, is preserved at the top of the canvas. The sitter wears a Baroque-style garment with a clear Dutch influence, both in its cut and in its preference for dark tones, associated at the time—as in contemporary Spain—with the affirmation of social status and economic well-being. The flat collar is composed of overlapping layers cut in delicate, plant-inspired geometric patterns. The wide, flared sleeves have a finely worked lace trim. In one hand, she holds a rose, and in the other, a pleated pouch richly decorated with gold embroidery and small pearls arranged in arabesque motifs, elements of marked symbolic character linked to commitment and social representation.
