Italian Venetian School of the 16th Century - The Last Supper - Oil on panel. Dimensions: 104 x 157 cm. This important composition depicts the Last Supper, painted by an artist from the post-Dürerian Nordic tradition, active in the 16th century. The work remarkably combines elements of Northern European painting with clear references to the Italian, especially Venetian, style. The staged arrangement of the table, the spatial depth, and the use of chiaroscuro recall compositional solutions found in Cinquecento Venetian painting, with visible echoes of models developed by Tintoretto and his circle, although reinterpreted with a distinct sensibility. At the same time, the characterization of the figures reveals a strong Flemish and Germanic influence. The faces are treated with marked expressive realism, accentuating physical features, ages, and gestures with an intensity that avoids any idealization. This deliberate ugliness, particularly visible in some apostles with harsh, aged features, directly harks back to the tradition inaugurated by Albrecht Dürer and continued by numerous masters of the Nordic region during the 16th century.
