Circle of Jean-Baptiste Santerre (Paris, 1651 – 1717) - Young man with parrot - Oil on oval canvas. Dimensions: canvas, 77 × 103 cm; with frame, 91 × 117 cm, depth 4 cm; frame width, 7 cm. This important composition depicts a richly dressed young woman with a Fontanges-style hairstyle and a hat adorned with feathers, characteristic elements of courtly fashion at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries. In her slightly outstretched left hand, she holds a parrot, a symbol of social status and, at the same time, a Marian emblem associated with purity and innocence; in her right, she carries a basket of flowers and fruit, reinforcing the allegorical nature of the scene. In the background appear two figures, presumably her confessor and stepmother, who lend narrative depth and moral context to the representation. The work is presented in a high-quality frame made of richly carved oak, gilded with gold leaf, perfectly in keeping with the decorative taste of the period. The painting belongs to the French tradition of the Louis XIV era, showing clear stylistic affinities with the circle of Jean-Baptiste Santerre, particularly in the delicate treatment of the faces and the restrained elegance of the composition.
