“Tankagle” dance mask, Ivory Coast, Dan ethnic group, late 19th century - Carved wood. Dan dance mask known as a tankagle, of remarkable sculptural quality. It is most likely a female mask, as indicated by the almond-shaped, slanted eyes and the sensual, carefully modeled lips. It shows clear signs of ancient ceremonial use, evidencing its ritual and performative function within Dan culture.
