Workshop of Jean-Baptiste Santerre (Paris, 1651 – 1717) - The Cabbage Cutter or Noon - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 93 × 74 cm (30F frame format). This important composition depicts a young servant girl, half-length and enhanced by a studied interplay of light and shadow, just before cutting a cabbage. Her gaze is thoughtful and almost enigmatic, directed towards the viewer. The scene combines naturalism and psychological refinement, characteristic features of the work produced by artists in Jean-Baptiste Santerre's circle during the first half of the 18th century. The work has been examined by the expert Éric Turquin, who has confirmed it as a painting from the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Santerre. Specialists consider the example held in the Bordeaux Museum to be the most faithful and accomplished of those known; the present painting closely resembles that model, both in format and in the quality of execution and the richness of its color palette. The canvas has not been relined; it was restretched on a frame with wedges in the 19th century and has been cleaned and varnished by our conservator. Batch in international warehouse (within the EU).
