Jacques Van Coppenolle (Montigny-sur-Loing, 1878 –1915) - The corral - Oil on canvas. Dimensions: canvas, 55 × 38 cm; with frame, 73.5 × 55.5 cm. A magnificent painting of a courtyard, signed by Jacques Van Coppenolle, undoubtedly considered one of his most accomplished works on this theme. As often happens when a composition achieves considerable success, the artist reproduced it on several occasions with slight variations, and examples very close in composition to this work are known. The scene is characterized by a vibrant and luminous palette, with a highly colorful treatment that gives the composition a marked effect of vitality and movement, almost ”alive.” The work is presented in a channeled frame made of wood and stucco, gilded with gold leaf. The painting is preserved in excellent condition, mounted on its original stretcher. There are minor old repairs on the reverse of the canvas, with no visible retouching on the painted surface. The work can be dated to the late 19th or early 20th century. Jacques Van Coppenolle, like his father Edmond van Coppenolle (who signed his work as E. Coppenolle), was a renowned painter and worked as a painter-decorator at the Montigny-sur-Loing earthenware factory, where he was particularly noted for his Impressionist landscape decorations of the Loing Valley. Mobilized during the First World War, he died on the front in 1915. As a painter, even more so than his father, he specialized in courtyard scenes, which became one of the most characteristic themes of his work. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU).
