The intimate, domestic scene is firmly rooted in the tradition of Dutch genre paintings inspired by Rembrandt's legacy. Nicolas Maes, born in Dordrecht in January 1634 and died in Amsterdam in 1693, was one of the most prominent Dutch painters of his time, especially renowned for his intimate genre scenes and portraits. Between 1648 and 1653, he was a pupil of Rembrandt in Amsterdam, whose influence profoundly marked his work, particularly in his use of chiaroscuro.
