Bidspirit auction | Important Neoclassical Fireplace in Travertine
Important Neoclassical Fireplace in Travertine Marble, 19th Century - Finely crafted Italian travertine marble. Dimensions: 127 x 160 cm. This fireplace with a balanced architectural structure features sober lines and harmonious proportions, with classically inspired decoration that combines functionality and ornamental refinement. The front is organized by two pilasters with flat, molded shafts, supporting a frieze crowned by a molded cornice with a pronounced overhang. In the center of the frieze, a lobed shield flanked by intertwined vegetal scrolls in low relief stands out, lending dynamism to the composition through ornamentation that evokes the decorative language of the Italian Renaissance. The marble surface retains its original patina, with a porous texture and warm nuances typical of travertine, a material prized for its durability and aesthetic value in the Italian sculptural and construction tradition. Executed at the beginning of the 20th century, this piece reflects the historicist taste of the period, with a formal language that reinterprets the decorative codes of classical architecture, adapting them to a bourgeois domestic context. Its sober and noble presence, along with its excellent state of preservation, make it a prominent example of decorative arts linked to classical-inspired interior design.
