The work presents a close-up portrait of an elderly male saint, his face intensely focused and his gaze lowered, immersed in an atmosphere of spiritual introspection. The laterally directed lighting accentuates the modeling of the forehead, nose, and cheekbones, while immersing part of the bald skull and thick beard in a shadowy hue that enhances the dramatic expression of the whole. The monastic habit peeking over the shoulder identifies the figure as a religious figure, possibly a hermit or a Capuchin priest, common figures in Baroque devotional iconography.
