Bidspirit auction | Chinese koi dragon brooch with
Chinese koi dragon brooch with enamels and stones, 20th century - Yellow gold vermeil on 925 sterling silver, goldsmithing technique with filigree, reliefs, and applied enamels. Measures 6.5 x 4.3 cm; weight 9.3 g. Large antique Chinese brooch, designed as a complex koi dragon with a sinuous body and dynamic composition, crafted with an intricate filigree mesh of thick relief that lends depth and visual richness to the piece. The figure features an expressive head with eyes formed by two small set rubies, while in its mouth it holds a spherical natural carnelian like a flaming pearl, a symbolic element associated with energy and prosperity in Eastern tradition. The dragon's body is articulated with abundant relief details and enriched with enamels of different tones, applied in selected areas to accentuate the chromatic contrast and the ornamental quality of the piece. The vermeil finish enhances the volume of the metalwork and complements the colors of the stones and enamels. The reverse side displays the 925 silver hallmarks, and the clasp incorporates a safety lock. This is a jewel of remarkable presence and technical complexity, representative of early 20th-century Chinese goldsmithing, conceived both as a personal adornment and as a piece of strong symbolic significance.
