Bidspirit auction | Vegetable bowl from the East

Vegetable bowl from the East India Company in blue and white porcelain, China, 18th century - Underglaze blue decorated porcelain. Measures 25 x 22.5 cm. Contoured vegetable tureen with lid, decorated with a lakeside landscape arranged in sections, combining pavilions, masses of vegetation, and planes of water articulated through a balanced composition. The contrast between the white background and the cobalt blue enhances the clarity of the motif, while the gently undulating edges lend elegance to the piece. The lid has a visible crack, but this does not detract from the overall formal and decorative coherence of the piece. This type of tableware, produced in China during the 18th century for the East India Company, reflects Western tastes for idealized landscape scenes, thus becoming part of the tradition of export porcelain.
