Bidspirit auction | Three-panel folding screen in carved

Three-panel folding screen in carved wood with leather panels, India, 19th century - Carved teak wood and polychrome leather. Measures 225 x 168 cm. This screen, composed of three hinged panels, is made of finely chiseled teak wood with profuse decoration of scrolls, rinceaux, and vegetal motifs that cover the entire structure. Each panel incorporates central panels covered in polychrome cordovan leather, decorated with stylized floral motifs arranged in symmetrical and rhythmic compositions. The carving displays great depth and precision, creating contrasts of light and shadow that enhance the ornamental character of the piece. The balance between the decorative exuberance of the wood and the chromatic richness of the leather gives the piece a strong visual presence. This work is attributable to late 19th-century Indian production and was conceived both as a functional element for dividing spaces and as a decorative object of high artisanal value.
