Bidspirit auction | Louis XV style clock, French
Louis XV style clock, French School, 19th century - Finely chased gilt bronze and marquetry wood. Measures 66 x 31 x 14 cm. This large-format pendulum clock is conceived as a complex sculptural architecture, structured in several stepped and richly ornamented sections, where clockwork and sculptural elements are harmoniously integrated. The central section houses a circular dial with enameled cartouches for the hours in Roman numerals, set against a background profusely chased with arabesques and rinceaux that reinforce the sense of ornamental richness. The whole rises to a crowning element surmounted by a married woman, dressed in the style of classical antiquity, holding a spear and shield, establishing a visual narrative of an allegorical and heroic nature. The sides are flanked by gilded bronze atlantes, rendered with anatomical vigor and symbolic structural function, while the lower section is enriched by a sculptural group of two seated female figures accompanied by a putto, integrated into a theatrical setting of rocaille and vegetal motifs. The ensemble rests on four feet with lion masks and volutes, which lend visual solidity and dynamism. The quality of the chiseling, the subtlety in the modeling of the figures, and the balance between mass and ornamentation demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship, fully inscribed within the French historicist tradition of the 19th century, where the Louis XV style is reinterpreted with decorative exuberance and technical virtuosity, resulting in a work of great visual impact and strong scenographic presence.
