Bidspirit auction | Monastery gong on bronze plaque,

Monastery gong on bronze plaque, Burma, 19th century - Bronze. Bell-shaped plaque intended for ritual use, cut with an everted and symmetrical profile, with slightly raised sides. The deliberately austere surface displays an antique patina in warm tones, marked by traces of oxidation and use that attest to its prolonged use in a monastic context. The upper perforation allowed for suspension, while the thicker central area concentrates the sound. The simplicity of the decoration emphasizes the spiritual function of the object, designed to mark the rhythm of religious life and accompany Buddhist ceremonies. The quality of the casting and the balance of the proportions place this gong within the Burmese artisanal tradition of the 19th century, where sonic efficacy and formal dignity take precedence over excessive ornamentation. 41 x 30 cm.
